Sorry for the late reply. By default, :narrow is '40!, which means - cut headlines to max 40 symbols when inserting into the table. In contrast, :narrow 50 means - put headlines in full and use column width in Org tables to provide visual narrowing (that's where <50> is coming from). There is no need to do visual narrowing when each column for headline is ensured to have maximum NN! width.
