Thanks Daniel, yes, I understand the need to load org early, and am sure that my approach succeeds in doing so (without the need to re-make emacs-master). Nonetheless, I recently found that that the addition of a `make clean` on org-mode was necessary to delete the compiled .elc files in which (apparently?) used macros whose definition had changed in the interim.
