Hi Luke, thanks for the very comprehensive answer. I can now see where you are heading. And it's a laudable direction.
But not for me because of one fundamental property of org: "it's all text". I've been in this business a very *long* time and, if I've learnt anything at all, it's that formats come and go but text remains [1]. If I have any issue with what org or emacs are doing, I *know* that I can open up the file in vim, say, and have all my content available. Or I can M-x text-mode RET in emacs and I can see everything as well.
