I believe a fork is justifiable here. It's no more than a UI to libfolks, and patching out upstream UI changes and applying them to the changed codebase probably will be more tedious than just maintaining a fork. I also believe that in this particular case autotools are severely misused, and the sooner we get rid of this particular instance of them, the better (we can't even build this thing without severe hacks).
