Faced with the same dilemma awhile ago, I built a four band K1 with the ATU and have had no regrets. Since the longest trek for me has been to the park about a mile away, the increased portability of the KX1 wasn't an advantage. The K1, paddle, gel cell, and antenna fit inside an old laptop case for traveling. Recently, I've been glad mine has 15M capability, have made quite a few QSOs with the K-1 sitting on my desk (adjacent to an IC718 and Triton IV). Just a fun little rig to use.
