I used a wood countersink with a rounded drill tip. Went down about 2/8 inch. I found that a metal strip is just below the plastic surface of the knob. I went through this. I made sure it was smooth, but it would have been better if I'd had a machine shop do this.
Of course it doesn't look professional. But it works smooth and is a functional improvement on the cheap.
