Johnny - The best people to recruit for Ham radio are not the ones who only think of it as a replacement for a telephone, but for the ones who are fascinated in the other aspects - the interaction of factors that affect radio propagation, or antenna design, or competition, or "collecting" (like DXing), or electronics design, or emergency communications.
I've been a Ham since I was 16 years old. I'm 48 now, as excited about radio as I've ever been, and have realized that I won't have enough time to enjoy and learn about all the different areas before my time here is over.
