I've gotten myself into that state a few times, which is quite unnerving!  I
believe I did this by accidentally interrupting the download process.  The
solution may be patience.  Make sure you have a good serial hardware
connection, that your K3 Utility is open to the update page and then power
cycle the K3.  Then WAIT....  Mine has always recovered but I honestly can't
accurately describe how I got into the state...or out of it, but I've always
succeeded.
