My guess is that you are driving too hard if the ALC bars indicate more than 5 or 6 bars on a regular basis. Since Lyle is the designer of those parts, I would tend to believe what he is saying.

A good data mode operator monitors ALC all the time as using ALC can often result in a wide signal.
