This is almost certainly the case. Please check the 5-pin header between the FP and DSP boards to make sure they're mated correctly. Its easy to miss this.

It was cured by removing the front panel and refitting it, taking care to make sure all the connector pins were made. With original fault the rear panel connection of a microphone worked ok.
