I also got a VX-7R (in black) and think it is nasty. Forget ever using it without the (thick) book, and short wave performance is VERY poor, as you would expect for a little radio. Loads of 'features' like a band scope (worthless).
Its fine for the vhf ham bands as a HT I suppose. Seems rugged and water proof, and has a good built in battery. I used to have an icom Q7 little thing that was better, you did not always need the book, just when you wanted it to figure out the sub audible tones.
