Hi Fred:
Virtually ALL of the components are on the BOTTOM side of the main PC
board (RF Board).
If you can find a pic of the bottom of the RF board, you'll see most
of the SMD components.
And believe me, they're there!
Also, remember that most, if not all, of the [ics we've seen so far
are of a much
less than fully 'tricked out' K3... so some (though surely not all)
of the available
space is reserved for yet to be installed options.

In the few K3 photos that have gotten out,
and which have appeared in various places - it looks
as if the basic K3 has tons of un-used space
inside the cabinet? And there didn't appear
to be a lot of SMD's showing? Am I missing
something?
Last photo I saw (from an Alaskan ham event) -
it looked like 1 large heat sink, 1 large PCB,
1 small PCB and a ton of extra space. (and of
course, the front panel)
When I opened up my 5/2007 IC-706MKIIG - the
very first PCB of many, has literally tons of
SMD's everywhere one could see.
Perhaps the K3's shown in photos, are not
fitted out with all the options, filters,
2nd receivers, etc. But I didn't see too many
surface mounted PCB plugs either.
It will be interesting to get our hands
on it when it ships! I guess it is a little
like buying that 1953 6-cylinder Chevy Corvette,
before it hit the show rooms, and without
touching one. Only distant photos ......
