Actually, I had previously seen your pictures after Googling for "elecraft kx1 c56" yesterday, but it was a little too dark to see clearly what you had done. Thanks for the additional explanation. It sounds like your approach of tacking the first capacitor lead down to its pin and then working on the other will work.
(I feel a bit squeamish about cutting off those capacitor leads instead of sticking them through holes, but what the heck!) Thanks.
