The reason I went with a 3 Diopter magification lamp was for the longer focal length compared to the 5 Diopter. I also purchased one with a rectangular lens where the lens rotates in its mount, --- independently from the moveable arms. The 3 power reading glasses I picked up at Wally World were very pour quality. The reading glasses at Costco are many times better than Walmart. I originally borrowed the mag light my wife used for sewing until an errant wire clipping caused the florescent lamp to explode in my face. So I was sure to buy a mag lamp with a protective cover over the lamp. Something else that helped a great deal in building the K2 was using a temperature controlled soldering station with a 1/16" screwdriver tip (chisel tip). The conical tip that came with the iron was totally inadequate for soldering in tight spaces --- where you need total control over how the solder flows. I ended up with the inexpensive CSI-1A soldering station from circuitspecialists.com. And serveral sizes of chisel tips. When you crank the temp up to 750 degs on one of those soldering stations, the high temp causes the paint to vaporize on the end of the enamel wire and allows for perfect tinning of the end of the toroid wires.
