Ingo, Historically, Elecraft updates have been optional & free. You are not required to install them. MY KX3 is from 2012 and has gone through many updates to get it where it is today. You can go to the last Firmware update document and see all of the updates Elecraft made; most from requests of the owners! My original Elecraft was a low serial number K3. It seemed in retrospect that we were getting updates monthly (probably weren't that many). My K4 was the same. I especially liked the CESSB update. The net I ran once a week thought I got a new power amp!
