FYI,
I have my K3 always connected to my Windows 10 PC and never had any trouble
with COM port assignments.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 interface to Win10 PC

Norm,

I use my K2 with N3FJP's Amateur Contact Log. First with WIn10, and now with
a Win 11 machine.

The biggest headache for me was random COM port reassignment. After an
update, sometimes the system would change or just eliminate an existing COM
port. This happened a lot with Win 10 in the early days, but it got better
towards the end of the OS's life. It still occasionally happens with a WIN
11 update.

I built my own "serial-like" cable for the K2, using Elecraft's special
wiring, and I use a USB to serial adapter for the computer. The first
adapter I bought had a crap chipset in it and it wouldn't work. I bought a
second, more expensive one with a "verified" FDTI chipset. The computer saw
it immediately, installed a driver, and it works just fine.

And as previously mentioned, check the baud rate. It took me a bit to sort
it all out.

Good luck. 73,

Jim KO5V
