Thanks, Jack W6FB and Dave N8SBE, for your suggestions. I've been diverted to other non-radio tasks for the past few days, and I hope to conduct a more systematic exploration of the problem over the weekend. I'll make some careful sweep measurements of the impedance presented to the KAT3 ATU after I adjust the Matchbox for the lowest SWR at a given frequency.
I suppose there are really two separate questions in my original post: * --Why does the K3 reduce power to 5 watts from 95 watts for what appears to be a small increase in SWR upon tuning away from the previous ATU tune frequency? — Is there a systematic means of restoring full TX power short of power cycling the radio? The first question may be of more academic interest. I'll investigate it as such. The second question is about steps needed to reset the TX power to its prior level. I don't recall power cycling the K3 during the contest, but I certainly tried re-tuning the ATU, adjusting the TX POWER control up and down around its desired setpoint, changing modes to CW and back to SSB, and probably muttering incantations in an obscure Sumerian dialect. If there was something that seemed a repeatable fix, I have forgotten it. I'll take better notes and report back. Thanks to all for your interest, and 73, Mike, K8CN P.S. Shout-out to N8SBE from an old Ann Arborite! ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
