Are the Alpha surge protectors different than the arc plugs in the Delta-4 switches? I've never had an issue with those at high power. Are they designed to operate at a low impedance (50 ohms) which would present a much lower voltage peak? Or could the arc plug in them become damaged and cause them to arc at a much lower voltage?
