The rainy season coincides with the logging season. Since it is so
wet fire danger is near zero. Skidding logs during the dry season can
start fires just from the friction between logs. During the wet there is
little need for the fire watch crew to stand guard for a week after a
clearcut has been graded and transported to the mill. Normally the
loggers cut stands in full sections so the Coast Range is a checkerboard
on a mile square grid. On my way to town this week I passed through four
active sites before I got to my mailbox in Buxton.
When you meet a logger in town they are easy to recognize. The
thousand yard stare is a tipoff, they are dead tired from on the job
since 4 AM. Their attire is obvious too: suspenders, no belts - ever;
they’re wearing slippers; and the cuffs of their jeans have been ripped
off with both seams cut upward an inch or two. The slippers are because
they normally wear corks which would shred any flooring or the cab of
their truck. Suspenders and ripped seams are due to the nature of their
work. Most non-fatal injuries are from being crushed by logs so the
ripped seams and suspenders allow rapid access to their limbs.
Mostly they make great neighbors except for being awakened by large
timber hitting the earth or when they drop stumps into very large steel
containers. Luckily the sound only carries about five miles or so and
you get used to the whumping sounds over the years. Each time they open
a new block the view of the terrain opens up too. I can now see the top
of my mountain from a number of angles.
