I bought a Palm Radio mini paddle a few years ago. I love it. I found it very easy to adjust to have a great feel. You can adjust the spacing, the tension, and also set it to have either hard or soft stops. I like how it retracts to prevent damage, and I like the multiple mounting options (the base can use magnets, screws, or double sided tape, and can attach to the bottom, top, or either side). I used mine with my base radio for some time, and would be quite happy to use one as a permanent base paddle. I didn't feel it was a compromise at all. I'm now using it mobile, and it works great there too.
