Thanks for the advice, Paul. A few other folks emailed me the same suggestion of using a diode or two initially to drop the V level & that's what I'll do.
I have a 3-day backpacking trip planned for the last weekend of this month which also happens to be the date of QRPTTF, so I'll probably be on the air a lot and want to maximize the operating time I get from the rig/batteries. I think starting out at the top end of the safe voltage range will help me to do that.
