Thanks to the replies I've received so far!
   
  Ron, you are correct in that my message was asking to different questions.  
The first is whether the MDS I calculated was typical even though the XG1 
'manual' indicates I should expect -125db vs. my measured at -120db.  I don't 
recall whether I set the filter to 500hz, so I'll go back and do it again.  
With a smaller bandwidth, the XG1 OFF noise level might be lower enough to get 
me closer to nominal.
   
  To the others that responded about the audio level, I guess I should have 
stated that the headphone level is LOUD.  It' the speaker level that I was 
trying to fix.  I mean, why have a speaker if it can't be heard?  I have an 
ICOM 703 that fills the room with audio.  It's just nice to use the speaker to 
tune through the band and if there is a station I want to contact, THEN use 
headphones. Buying an external speaker to use is another possibility, I 
suppose.  Jim (K4ZM), your thought about checking Q10 is a good one.  I'll 
check it out and let everyone know.
