First - laptops generally have terrible soundcards. If you are at all serious about digital modes get an external USB solution. Difference is like day and night. But you should still be able to get Digipan running. You will not necessarily hear the PSK.

Second - not all USB <=> serial port converters are the same. Some are really rotten and should be thrown away, there is no such thing as a cheap USB <=> serial converter. Get one known to work with XP, do not believe the packing.

Third - you may actually be opening the infra-red rather than the USB <=> serial COM port, infra-red also uses serial protocols. I am guessing that the error is because the COM port is already open - do you have a mobile phone or PDA software running? Have you installed anything that also uses a COM port? (The error you get is not very informative, this is just lazy programming.)

So I suggest,

[1] Get a Creative USB Audigy soundcard at a later date.
[2] Get a known brand USB <=> serial converter - ask for a recommendation.
[3] If possible get someone to come round and help?
