I would start Console (in the Utilities folder), choose "All Messages", then
start the KX3 Utility and see what is logged.

For example, I just ran it connected to a serial device that does not have a
KX3 connected and saw a number of these:

5/23/13 8:19:25.000 AM kernel: ttyioss12000001: enqueueData rtn (e00002d8)
5/23/13 8:19:26.000 AM kernel: ttyioss12000001: enqueueData rtn (e00002d8)
5/23/13 8:19:26.000 AM kernel: ttyioss12000001: enqueueData rtn (e00002d8)

Not very helpful to me, but it might help Elecraft debug it.

Also probably worth checking that your FTDI driver is up to date, though they
don't seem to have changed them in a while.
