Yup. My career was in the semiconductor industry and we knew several decades ago that strain greatly enhanced the probability of dendrite growth. I didn't see anything new in that article other than maybe the ability to actually watch it happen.
And to put things slightly on topic, I'd be amazed if there were any devices in Elecraft products that weren't fabricated with that knowledge in hand.
