Fred, if you have the DB15 cable installed correctly, the KAT500 and KPA500
will follow the K3 on band changes without needing the dit. 

If it doesn't, you have a problem with your DB15 interface. 

AFAIK, the communications is K3 to KPA50. Not the other way around.

KAT500 question:  Mine needs one dit to get to the new band.  I have the
15-conductor cables between the K3, KAT500, and KPA500.  I thought everybody
knew what band I was on automagically.  FWIW: I almost always change bands
on the KPA500 ... I thought all the rest followed.

This is not a "problem," I always send more than one dit answering a
station, just curious.
