You might view it as two different routes to a solution, but the real reason is to have a working solution for SSB (via Mic) AND a different one for Data. The Data selection disables equalization and compression for you so you don't have to remember to do it manually.
I am constantly changing modes from CW to SSB to DATA, so having the appropriate levels/gains/presets for each is a real convenience.
