Actually, you don't need a keying interface. The K3 does it all. And I, too, have had no problem keying the K3 from N1MM without a Winkey.
In the Config menu, go to PTT-KEY. Rotate VFO A to choose OFF-DTR. (You can also choose any combination of DTR and RTS from the serial port to control PTT and Keying. See Table 3-12 in the KE7X book, if you have it). OFF-DTR means that there is no PTT control and the K3 will expect a keying signal on the serial port DTR signal. In N1MM (I can't speak for other programs), go to the CONFIGURER->HARDWARE and click the CW/Other Details box for the serial port you connected to the K3. Click on SET and make DTR be CW. That's it. The serial port will be the radio control interface and also will key the radio when N1MM sends CW. No LPT or any other keying interface needed. I haven't done it (no SSB contesting experience) but I suspect that the PTT capability can be use to key the radio when N1MM is being a voice keyer. DX guys, see you this weekend :-) 73 Fred "The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and Operation" www.ke7x.com -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Julius Fazekas n2wn Sent: Tuesday, February 14, 2012 1:15 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] another contesting how-to question Tim, Winkeyer is a great piece of equipment and was needed for the K2 after some changes to N1MM years back, due to timing issues. For the K3, you do not "need" Winkeyer at all, and we're talking up to 40 WPM. You do need two ports. You can use the LPT port or USB to Serial adapter from your computer, or there are serial add-on cards to be had. N1MM generates CW. You will need to build/buy a very simple serial port keying interface to key the K3 from the program. It is in the N1MM start document, and I see there are a couple folks who have built little boards for CW/PTT/FSK for this purpose. Winkeyer may be a cost effective option, if you don't have a usable second port option. I traded my last built Winkeyer for an un-built kit and some aluminum tubing. The keyer is still unbuilt. The aluminum is in 40M vertical form ;o) Check the getting started with N1MM document, it explains a lot of this in easy to read details. One of the better start=up guides I've seen...
