K3 #6052 is up and running. I just finished building it this weekend and had a few hours to play with it. All I can say is WOW! The build was very smooth and everything fit together perfectly. The K3 is much more impressive in real life that it is in photos. I’ve learned to take all the reviews about it with a grain of salt. Every positive comment about the K3 is true, in my opinion and the negative comments, I just don’t understand. The only thing that I can attribute them too is not reading the manual, not comprehending the manual, fat fingers, impatience, brand loyalty, being grumpy, etc. Coming from a K2, it was very easy to figure out.
One of my concerns was how it sounds. Some people were complaining that it was fatiguing after a while. Are they really serious? It was pointed out to be that many of those complaints were from earlier times and that improvements have been made since then. There are so many ways to alter the sound and I really love the AFX. I normally use stereo headphones so maybe some of the complaints were based on the built in speaker. However, to be fair, I haven’t spent long enough on it yet to give an accurate opinion. I work mostly CW but even SSB sounds great. Ergonomically, it’s perfect. There is more than enough space between buttons and compared to my other rigs, the size is fine. Overall my first impression is that it’s everything I was expecting. It was well worth the time that I spent in researching and waiting. Thanks Elecraft.
