Is, perhaps, someone being confused because they see that they must select the com port associated with the radio in the program at the computer (just as it is in the Elecraft Utility programs), they think that it is at the radio that selection is being made - just as they enter frequency and other data at the computer that changes things at the radio?

I don't own a K3. But the original post mentioned two K3 operating positions each controlled by separate computers. One computer uses Com1 on the RS232 port and the other uses Com3. There was no question ... but a request for an explanation. Perhaps you can provide the explanation.
