Phil, I would guess that the Yaesu speaker is 8 ohms impedance (that is a quite common impedance) - a 4 ohm speaker like that used for the K2 internal speaker will allow more power than an 8 ohm speaker.
The efficiency of the speaker has a lot to do with how loud it sounds too. Some speakers sound loud with just a watt of drive and others need more than that just to produce a whisper level sound. I use an external amplifier that will drive about 3 watts peak into a 9 ohm speaker (5 inch woofer type), and that is plenty of 'earshattering' power for my use. I have always thought the K2 to be a bit 'wimpy' on the audio output - but I have found it is really adequate when driving the internal speaker, just not a lot of reserve to overcome a high ambient acoustical noise level. 73, Don W3FPR Life is what happens when you are making other plans ----- Original Message ----- > I recently had one of Elecraft's recommended technicians add all the mods > and S/W to bring my unit back to current production.
