Got it! I added the same rule to /lib/udev/rules.d. After rebuilding the image the arduino still throws a dialup error and to add the user to the group but we can now connect to ttyACM0 and upload compiled code onto the arduino. Everything is cool.
Now... It's about time to upgrade to 14.04!!! ... and go through a whole bunch of surprises all over again! Jim
