I am a consultant volunteering some time with a non-profit private school.
This school is investigating using Edubuntu instead of a Microsoft environment.

Since hardware availability is an issue for them, I have created three Edubuntu
workstations on one of my Virtual Servers, with an offer to create up to two
more. It was my intention to have their evaluation committee use a free VNC
viewer on their Windows workstations to remotely access these Edubuntu
workstations, whether at school or at their leisure from home.  From a
volunteer support point of view, if they trash an Edubuntu workstation, I can
rebuild from home at my convenience if necessary.  Two weekends ago, I
downloaded the latest stable version of Ubuntu Workstation, and the Edubuntu
add-on.  I successfully created three virtual Edubuntu workstations in VMWare,
enabled Remote Desktop, and I could access the workstations remotely through
the latest version of the Real VNC viewer.  To get this to work originally, I
discovered that I had to check the "Require Encryption" and save configuration,
then uncheck "Require Encryption" and save the
configuration.  It was as if the "Require Encryption" requirement was set by
default, but was not displayed correctly in the configuration panel.

Last weekend, I had to move the physical VMware server to its original
location, and everything was shutdown gracefully, including all VM's.  When I
powered back up, I could no longer connect the the Edubuntu workstations, and I
cannot find any way to get them to work now.  According to the RealVNC website,
the error I am receiving is related to the VNC server wanting to secure the
session.  The free version of VNC viewer does not encrypt the session, and for
this testing, encryption is not required.

Since I could not find any firewall or configuration issue preventing access,
and having made certain all three Edubuntu workstations did not have
the "Require Encryption" check box enabled, I created a new Edubuntu VM.  Here
are the results.

1: Installed Ubuntu Workstation 9 2.6.24-19-generic
** Windows based VNC Clients work with this configuration.
2: Installed Edubuntu add-in, no reboot
** Windows based  VNC Clients work with this configuration.
3: Rebooted Edubuntu Workstation
** Windows based  VNC Clients DO NOT work with this configuration.
4: Fully patched (107 files downloaded)
** Windows based VNC Clients DO NOT work with this configuration.
I have even tried the original fix of checking then unchecking the "Require
Encryption" advanced option.

I had posted this issue on ubuntuforums, but have had zero response.  I am
hoping to get this school started on their evaluation so that tehy can make a
properly informed decision for the 2009 Fall start.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
