Thanks for the pointer. Here's a strange thing though, I did apt-get remove compiz and it removed the compiz package, but compiz was still in /usr/bin/ and it still ran when a user logged in. the dpkg log says: 2011-04-18 08:55:21 status installed compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:26 remove compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:26 status half-configured compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:26 status half-installed compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:27 status config-files compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:27 status config-files compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:27 status config-files compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15 2011-04-18 08:55:27 status not-installed compiz <none> and apt-get remove compiz returns: Package compiz is not installed, so not removed I ended up chmoding /usr/bin/compiz to 700 and logging back in. Then compiz didn't start. I am going to use this for a while before i put it into production.
