Had I known, I would have commented positively on this request. The following is to the best of my knowledge:
When X12 was originally set up, the people setting it up created a corporation called the Data Interchange Standards Association with a grand view of having more than X12 under the umbrella. Over the years, the tail wagged the dog. X12 does all the work, DISA takes all the money. Prior to its recent incorporation, X12 had an ambiguous legal standing as an entity. There is a vague assignment to DISA of the intellectual property created by X12. The ambiguities in the relationship of the two organizations has been problematic for many years. I see X12’s incorporation and desire to become directly accredited to be a good move for the organization and the industry.
