But seriously...
It's one thing to have the software "take a while" to do something, but bottom
line you will be dependent on hardware and the
design of the software re how it handles "a lot to do." .
One other thing to check... check that there is adequate virtual memory
availble to the system, in this case meaning the page files.
If you don't have enough page file allowed to hold all the data you are loading
to virutal memory, you get a 'memory allocation
error' for which VERY FEW pieces of software actually test. When that
happens you can start getting some REALLY weird things
happening, although "hang" is not too strange.
I've had this happen to me with two different clients... the 'virtual memory'
settings limited the max size of the page file to way
not enough. First the application software starting getting RPC (Remote
Procedure Call) server errors and then it just stopped
working. Changed the size of the swap file to "allow Windows to manage the
size" and neither system has complained again.
