Alpha characters sent in a numeric field, wrong length for fixed length items, maximum field length exceeded for variable length fields, failure to conform to compression rules and character sets, illegal qualifier codes ...... The list is not endless but it is considerable. After many years trying to persuade clients to conform to standards I am now pragmatic about it. If it is difficult for them to change to achieve conformity, and both parties to a transaction agree, I set the converter to ignore the non-compliance. They are consenting adults, and the rules exist to serve the needs of business, not the other way around.
