Questions to ask yourself:
Will the new map be cloned from an old map? Do you need to model a complex source or target, like an Oracle interface, or an IDOC? Are there unusual requirements? (eg, SDQs split into multiple Sales Orders?) Will you include support for a limited or unlimited time, once you implement the map? Does your customer have confidence in your ability to produce superior results? If it is a new map, and you have to model a source DSNO from Oracle, 40 yours may not be too long. If you are cloning a map you already charged them to develop, and all you have to do is tweak a couple of qualifiers, or change a Shipped From location name, you might want to lower the price significantly. If you will be in and out, and they will have to maintain the map, lower the price. If you will provide a 6-month guarantee, raise it. Communication with your customer, building trust with them, is just as important as being able to produce a slick map. More important. You can hire the map out. Make certain while you are building this trust that you do it with a wide-enough segment of their business. I once drove 1200 miles to meet with the new president of a software company I hoped to continue to work with, only to discover he had been canned while I was driving home. At least my family and I got to see the sights along the way. But I didn't work for them after that. I would suggest you make a good-faith estimate of the time required to create, etc., the map, apply a standard fudge-factor to cover unforeseen eventualities, and use that. The flat rate is too unrealistic. My 2 cents. I can do a map in about an hour while someone else on my team may take a week. I would like to get ideas from what others charge and how do you back it up. Do you use a tool or have some other method to estimate EDI projects. Anything you can share would be appreciated.
