I've pretty much given up on trying to understand how purchased (vs. legacy) Translators can allow "Standard-busting" data to go out.
If the variance is noted in the IG, we will accommodate it. Assuming it was NOT disclosed up front, when we get bad X12 from a customer's TP the first time, we push back--or at least ask them to provide in writing that they need an exception. Most of the time, it's a matter of "upping" the Max occurences (or tweaking an element's Min/Max length or changing a Mandatory to an Optional). We have a few instances where we actually are forced to deactivate the compliance checking on a given Element/Segment because adding the exceptions is too great a hassle (and the customer wants a solution that won't cost them anything, of course). We make it very clear that this now makes it THEIR responsibility to deal with the ramifications in the instance that a non-compliant ID field/usage/exceeded loop blows up their ERP...Caveat Emptor. Of course, having said this, I have contradicted my very first sentence. The real answer is (especially from the 800lb Gorilla's perspective) "because we can." Happy Friday! Gotta hit the hay...
