What often time happens is that I (retailer, wholesaler, manufacturer) am
not doing EDI with anyone but I have the opportunity to greatly expand my
business with this buyer/customer who will only buy from me via EDI. Should
I setup in-house, or go third party? And if I go third party, what do I
need? We, who have done EDI for years would have no trouble answering this
and many other questions; but we are not the ones who are asked. By the
time we get involved, most of the software and hardware is already decided,
and we are expected to clean up whatever loose ends need resolving.

I have no idea what it will cost to implement EDI so I stay conservative.
But as my business grows I discover that this initial investment is much too
lean and requires a much more robust system in order to keep up.

Sincerely,

Subject: [EDI-L] Re: <SALES> EDI Monitoring Service

Not to thrown yet another log onto this bonfire, but...

Isn't "EDI MONITORING" part of just about every single EDI Coordinator
(manager, tech, _______ title of your choice) job description and duties...?

This service seems a bit ... odd.

1 - if you're a bigger trading partner, you've already got staff to do this
(your EDI coordinator, administrator, whatever) who monitors your
send/receive sessions and/or the reports generated.

2 - if you're a small EDI player, you're probably using a third party for
your EDI processes - like an SPS Commerce or DI Central or _____ and it's
their job to be sure that your mailbox is properly sending & receiving data.

So, what is the value of this proposed service from this company...? As has
been mentioned many times, just twice a day is not really a valid time frame
as most EDI transactions are processing 24 hours a day - depending upon your
trading partner... And if you're any kind of a competent developer or
programmer, you probably already have something in place to monitor and
alert you of production stopping errors.

Plus, using the math that Ken provided, for $41K per year, you could hire
somebody to do it... even for the $29K figure, you could have some simple
clerical person monitoring it for you for 40 hours per week and that be
their only job function - therefore, nothing gets missed during their time
"on the clock"....

I think that the entire idea needs to be rethought out, not just the pricing
schedule.
