We are seeking applications to fill two (2) volunteer research assistant positions for Summer 2019. Positions will commence mid-June and end in mid-August during which time students will work with us on a variety of forest entomology projects related to the ecology of eastern spruce budworm.

We are Research Scientists with Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service at the Atlantic Forestry Service in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Our work focuses predominantly on the ecological and economic impact of insect forest pests in the eastern boreal forests of Newfoundland. Details of our research program can be found on our website: https://coniferlab.wixsite.com/home Required Qualifications • A college or university student or recent grad from a program in forest ecology, entomology, biology or related field • Capable of traversing rugged Newfoundland terrain, sometimes in remote places • You are a great team player– you value diversity, respect others, you look for ways to help when you can, and are generally a good person • You can work long hours when necessary • You can work independently as well as part of a team • You pay very close attention to detail and are organized, follow instructions from leaders, hard working, are proactive and safety-conscious • You enjoy working outdoors in the forest surrounded by biting insects, wind, rain, occasional snow in June etc… and enjoy collecting insects/spiders Preferred Qualifications • You have a particular and perhaps peculiar affinity for insects • You have some experience doing field research, and/or extensive outdoor activities (e.g., hiking) • You’re thinking about doing graduate-level research with bugs or ecology in the future • You have a valid driver’s license. Basic First Aid, CPR, and/or Wilderness First Aid would also be an asset • You have used GPS About the area The Atlantic Forestry Centre is located on the Grenfell campus of Memorial University in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Corner Brook is located in the scenic Humber Valley, surrounded by mountainous terrain and overlooking the Bay of Islands. The area strikes a perfect balance between urban amenities and outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, fishing, camping and zip lining to name a few.
