Community Science Program Assistant (Full-Time 1)

One Tam is a partnership made up of the National Park Service, California State 
Parks, Marin County Parks, Marin Municipal Water District and the Parks 
Conservancy. One Tam combines the expertise and resources of its partners to 
ensure the long-term health of Mt. Tamalpais by advancing efforts to restore 
ecosystems, improve trail corridors, enhance visitor services, expand education 
and stewardship programming, and inspire community support through volunteerism 
and philanthropy.

Position Overview:
With an understanding that active engagement in the care of nature leads to a 
deeper appreciation of its value, the One Tam Community Science team connects 
people to the lands of Mount Tamalpais by providing opportunities to contribute 
to the conservation science efforts of partner agencies. The team supports the 
health of Mount Tamalpais through a variety of community (citizen) science 
activities that aim to address ecological data gaps, implement long-term 
monitoring, provide formal and informal science education, and promote 
curiosity and participation in a wide range of audiences. The current program 
includes mountain-wide monitoring of terrestrial mammals and insect pollinators 
as well as Bioblitz events in support of inventory and restoration efforts. The 
Marin Wildlife Picture Index Project (MWPIP) is a landscape-level study of 
wildlife using motion-activated cameras and is a central component of the 
current program. Over the next 5 years, community science offerings will expand 
to include support for regional monitoring of new indicators including seeps 
and springs and herpetofauna.

The Program Assistant supports the Community Science Program Manager in 
implementing established ecological monitoring protocols including data 
collection, data entry, and data management, with an initial focus on MWPIP. 
The Program Assistant also supports partnerships with schools, colleges, and 
community groups by delivering programs, facilitating training, and organizing 
volunteer participation related to MWPIP. The Program Assistant also works to 
increase public awareness, engage new communities, and increase volunteer 
support for emerging community science efforts.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Program Delivery

  *   Delivers and facilitates regularly scheduled MWPIP volunteer programs.
  *   Delivers and facilitates programs and outreach for middle schools, high 
schools, and community organizations.
  *   Keeps WPI volunteer program documentation in good condition and up to 
date.
  *   Engages park visitors on site; communicates with the public about park 
issues, programs and educational opportunities.
  *   Contributes content to One Tam social media platforms.
  *   Assists in training and mentorship of 1-2 full-time interns, seasonal 
academic interns, and seasonal high school interns.
  *   Time allowing, supports other One Tam community outreach and engagement 
work, including habitat restoration and trail work events, youth programs, and 
special events.

Ecological monitoring

  *   Maintains wildlife cameras in remote areas with Community Science team 
and agency partners.
  *   Tracks MWPIP project progress on cloud-based databases.
  *   Supports data management needs of current and new community science 
projects.
  *   Assists with the preparation of documents and reports as needed.
  *   Assists in development of new community science projects.
  *   Time allowing, supports other One Tam work, including seasonal inventory 
and ecological monitoring efforts.

Administration

  *   Responds and tracks volunteer inquiries; collects volunteer data; 
maintains volunteer database.
  *   Supports Community Science Program Manager in maintaining up-to-date 
internal team communications and calendars.
  *   Supports logistics associated with tools, equipment, training, and 
staffing to provide agency-appropriate community science programming and to 
provide learning opportunities for interns.
  *   Maintains good communication and working relations with agency staff and 
other partners.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  *   Commitment and enthusiasm for fostering a community-based stewardship and 
community science programs and promoting inclusion and participation among 
diverse audiences.
  *   Demonstrated understanding of natural resources inventory and monitoring 
programs, to include basic understanding of scientific methods, sampling design 
development and data management.
  *   Strong organizational skills; demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy, 
and thoroughness.
  *   Ability and desire to work as part of a team on complex projects and 
programs.
  *   Proficiency with public speaking, desired experience leading educational 
programs or outreach.
  *   Can work directly with volunteers; treats others with respect; relates 
effectively to others when encountering difficult situations.
  *   Demonstrated familiarity with the ecology and natural resources of the 
Bay Area.
  *   Desired experience with wildlife camera installation and maintenance.
  *   Competent use of Google Drive, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  *   Familiarity with ArcGIS, mobile mapping technology, and general database 
applications.
  *   Experience navigating varied terrain on foot and with 4WD vehicles and 
performing fieldwork in inclement weather.
  *   Bilingual in Spanish or other language not required, but a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  *   Work is performed in an office operating a computer as well as an outdoor 
setting with potential for inclement weather and rugged terrain.
  *   Work is primarily performed sitting, standing, or walking.
  *   Work requires squatting and kneeling.
  *   Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

Terms:

  *   Applications due by: October 22, 2018
  *   Schedule: Full-time (40hrs), generally Tuesday – Saturday, with 
occasional exceptions
  *   Position is based out of San Rafael, CA
