This individual will be responsible for performing hatchery evaluations of each hatchery in the NYS hatchery system (3-4 annually). Working with DEC staff, the candidate will develop and conceptually design adaptive energy efficient fish culture systems. Expertise in services delivered may include an analysis on pump sizing, preventive maintenance schedules, reuse of culture water, waste water treatment, energy use and potential conservation measures, efficient management of the work environment and other opportunities for efficiency upgrades related to fish culture or work environment. Recommendations for water supply enhancement, energy efficiency upgrades that including renewable resources of energy, culture techniques, apparatus enhancement, security systems and fish health will all be encapsulated into a report for each hatchery. A primary objective of this project is to formulate simple and adaptive approaches to hatchery design so fish culture staff can build and install facility upgrades in a cost effective manner. The successful candidate is expected to provide expert advice to DEC hatchery managers and engineering staff. Along with other SUNY Cobleskill faculty the incumbent will serve as an aquaculture consultant that will be used as a resource by DEC staff to help creatively solve problems at DEC's hatcheries. The intent is for DEC hatchery personnel and SUNY Cobleskill faculty to creatively solve problems. Lastly, the successful applicant will also plan and conduct at 2-3 workforce training programs per year for NYSDEC hatchery personnel working in cooperation with NYSDEC staff.
