TITLE: Environmental Scientist III :Conservation Coastal Avian Scientist

LOCATION: 6180 Hay Point Landing Rd, Smyrna, DE 19977 
SALARY RANGE: $44,755 - $50,350/year + Benefits 
START DATE: November 12, 2018 
WORK SCHEDULE: 37.5 hours/week M-F (occasional nights and/or weekends) 


JOB DESCRIPTION: 
The primary responsibilities of this position will be to implement the 
Delaware Shorebird Conservation Plan. This includes conducting research 
and monitoring activities on migratory shorebirds to ensure conservation 
actions are developed and implemented using sound science. The incumbent 
will have access and will contribute to one of the largest datasets of 
marked shorebirds (both banding and resighting) including Red Knots, 
Ruddy Turnstones, and Sanderling. In addition, the incumbent will be 
expected to coordinate and lead a large group of volunteers and 
scientists during an intense migratory shorebird field season. 
Additionally, this position will lead the beach and island nesting bird 
management and protection program and implement monitoring and research 
projects for marsh birds associated with determining species richness, 
relative abundance and population parameters.  The focus of the position 
will be on the coastal habitats and avian resources of the state, 
however, the incumbent may also be responsible for other taxa, serving 
on regional and national science and planning teams and technical 
committees, assisting with the Breeding Bird Atlas and assisting with 
other conservation planning activities as needed.


DUTIES:    Specific responsibilities include the following:
•       Lead migratory shorebird research and monitoring activities for 
Delaware. This includes capture, banding, marking, and processing many 
species of shorebird.
•       Lead the beach and island nesting bird management and protection 
program. 
•       Develop monitoring and research projects for marsh birds to 
determine species richness, abundance and population parameters.
•       Coordinate and lead a large team of volunteers to conduct 
shorebird and marsh bird monitoring work.
•       Update and implement the Delaware Shorebird Conservation Plan.
•       Organize, process, and analyze large amounts of data.
•       Ensure data is disseminated to partners in a timely manner.
•       Oversee contracts.
•       Supervise seasonal and/or contractual staff.
•       Develop and administer grants ensuring various deadlines are 
met.
•       Represent the Division of Fish and Wildlife on various technical 
committees.
•       Assist with the development of the Breeding Bird Atlas and 
contribute to research and management of other taxa.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
1.  Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Life, Physical, or 
Applied Science or related field. 
2.  Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project 
management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing 
and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure 
objectives are met. 
3.  Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data. 
4.  Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, 
regulations, standards, policies and procedures. 
5.  Six months experience in using an automated information system to 
enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data. 
6.  Six months experience in technical report writing.
