Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit an abstract to a session we have organized for the 2018
AGU Fall Meeting <https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/> taking place Dec 10-14
in Washington DC.

In this session we will explore the biogeochemical dimensions of human
sanitation across the spectrum of sanitary infrastructure and from local to
global scales, and will begin building a scientific foundation for more
sustainable sanitation systems in both developed and developing contexts.

*B076: The Biogeochemistry of Human Sanitation: Local to Global Carbon,
Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Cycling associated with the Containment,
Treatment, and Reuse of Human Sanitary Waste*

Human sanitary waste accounts for significant fluxes of energy, carbon,
nutrients, and water globally. Innovative models for sanitation where
infrastructure is presently lacking, along with the retrofitting of
conventional wastewater treatment systems for enhanced resource recovery,
have the potential to re-shape global biogeochemical flows. This session
will explore how sanitation technologies across the spectrum from
decentralized passive systems (e.g., pit latrines; septic systems;
thermophilic composting) to centralized engineered systems with and without
advanced resource recovery impact global flows of nutrients and carbon.

We welcome submissions utilizing experimental observations, modeling,
and/or life cycle approaches to investigate biogeochemical cycling
associated with human sanitation practices across scales from
microbiological and/or chemical characterization of treatment processes to
regional-scale biogeochemical modeling. We particularly encourage studies
exploring the fate of carbon and/or nutrients, such as gaseous emissions
and leaching during biological treatment processes, and characterizing
recycled wastes and their impact on soil health after land application.

*2018 AGU Fall Meeting*

*“For the first time, the AGU Fall Meeting will be held in Washington,
D.C., where we will mark the launch AGU’s Centennial. A wide variety of
events are being planned that will take advantage of this special location
that will showcase our science to the U.S. and international policy
community, students, and public); leverage the local scientific community,
including events with the Smithsonian, National Academies, and others; and,
offer field trips to view the local geology and research institutes. The
Fall Meeting will also offer more workshops as well as new Tutorial
sessions to help students and researchers learn about new approaches and
techniques and introduce exciting science in other disciplines.*

*Additional information, including everything you need to know about
abstract submission is here: https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/
<https://fallmeeting.agu.org/2018/>. Please consider submitting an
abstract and/or attending to help show “What Science Stands For” and to
join in an exciting and informative start to AGU’s Centennial. Submissions
received by the early deadline of 25 July have a chance to win a $100 US
gift card.”*
