The Department of Biology and the Edwards Aquifer Research and Data Center (EARDC) seek a full-time Research Associate/Research Lab Manager. Position duties include tasks in EARDC and managing the Nowlin-Schwartz Aquatic Ecology Lab in the Freeman Aquatic Biology Building. Successful candidates must be self-motivated, easy to work with, have excellent communication skills, proficient in use of computers and instrumentation software, be willing to work both in the lab and in the field, willing to occasionally work non-standard hours (depending on current research projects), and must be willing to attend training for advanced use of instrumentation/software, as well as training for University policies and procedures (including but not limited to lab safety and chemical hygiene plans). Additional duties may include assisting with management of departmental laboratory and field equipment, including coordination of routine maintenance of common spaces, boats, and field vehicles. Monthly salary is $3,200+ (commensurate with experience).
Required Qualifications: 1) Experience working with analytical lab equipment. Examples include but are not limited to: ion chromatographs, C-N analyzers, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, laser isotope analyzers, spectrophotometers, etc… 2) Ability to work with faculty, staff, and graduate/undergraduate students, to instruct students in the use of equipment and in analytical procedures, and to manage student workers and volunteers. 3) Demonstrated expertise in trouble-shooting and problem-solving. 4) Strong skills in data QA/QC, documentation, and management 5) Excellent time-management skills 6) Excellent communication skills 7) Ability to work independently and with limited supervision 8) Competency with MS Office Suite 9) Must be able to periodically lift 50 pounds and work in outdoor field conditions. Preferred Qualifications: 1) Experience operating Dionex Ion Chromatography systems and Chromelion software. 2) Experience working with instrument softwares and customer support and/or tech support during trouble-shooting and routine service/maintenance 3) Experience with general bench-top and wet chemistry procedures 4) Ability to develop, write, and follow SOPs 5) Experience maintaining a chemical hygiene plan and chemical inventory 6) Experience working in the field and with common water quality sondes and samplers 7) Familiarity with aquatic ecology/biology 8) MS degree with 2 years experience working with instrumentation, or BS degree with similar or more experience and strong resume. 9) Experience using one or more statistical software packages a plus (SPSS, SAS, JMP, R, etc…) Questions about the position can be directed to Dr. Weston Nowlin (w...@txstate.edu) and/or Dr. Benjamin Schwartz (b...@txstate.edu).
