The Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary 
invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral research associate position 
with the VIMS Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) Monitoring Program. The 
candidate will research and implement image processing and analysis methods to 
reduce the annual cost to monitor SAV in Chesapeake Bay while maintaining or 
improving the monitoring products. The primary tasks will be:

*         Identifying and implementing automated aerial triangulation and 
orthorectification methods.

*         Evaluating available benthic remote sensing tools and methods for 
classifying SAV in a turbid estuary using annual multispectral imagery and 
available ancillary data.

*         Developing automated classification methods to facilitate and improve 
the annual Chesapeake Bay SAV monitoring project.



Required Qualifications

*         PhD at the time of appointment in Marine Science, Environmental 
Science, Geography or in an allied field with equivalent years of experience

*         Strong skills in remote sensing with imagery (e.g. photogrammetry, 
image classification, machine learning, object-based classification)

*         Demonstrated programming skills

*         Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to 
work effectively with all levels of staff.

*         Demonstrated experience in classification of environmental systems 
from aerial imagery



Preferred Qualifications

*         Experience with classification of benthic features

*         Experience with automated classification in a production environment
