The Researchers at Undergraduate Institutions Section of the Ecological 
Society of America is offering awards in the amount of $500 to help 
defray the cost of supporting the attendance and presentation of 
research by undergraduate students at ESA’s 2018 annual meeting in New 
Orleans.

To be eligible:
• The presenting author of the research presentation must be or have 
been an undergraduate student during the time the study was conducted 
(within the last two years)
• The undergraduate student and/or the research advisor must be current 
members of the Researchers at Undergraduate Institutions Section of ESA

To be submitted by the student (single email, multiple attached files 
are ok):
• Statement by the undergraduate student naming their research advisor 
and institution, and describing the research study conducted, their 
contribution to the study, and the reason they want to attend ESA’s 2018 
annual meeting to present the study
• Screenshot, email confirmation, and/or any other documentation that an 
abstract for presentation has been submitted, that the undergraduate 
student is the presenting author, and the type of presentation 
(contributed oral, poster) proposed
• Screenshot, email confirmation, and/or any other documentation that 
the undergraduate student is a member of the Researchers at 
Undergraduate Institutions Section of ESA (if the faculty advisor is 
not)

To be submitted by the research advisor (single email, multiple attached 
files are ok):
• Statement by the study’s research advisor (e.g. the faculty member 
that supervised the undergraduate student’s work on the study) naming 
the undergraduate student, attesting that the student is a current 
undergraduate or was at the time the study was conducted (within the 
last two years), and explaining the undergraduate student’s meritorious 
contribution to the study and the degree to which the undergraduate’s 
attendance and presentation at ESA’s annual meeting is financially 
constrained
• Screenshot, email confirmation, and/or any other documentation that 
the research advisor is a member of the Researchers at Undergraduate 
Institutions Section of ESA (if the undergraduate student is not)

Award decisions will be made via the following parameters:
• Up to three awards, based on the size of 2018 RUI section membership, 
in the amount of $500 each
• Priorities:  #1 Need (attendance and presentation is constrained 
without substantial financial support), #2 Student merit and 
contribution to diversity (e.g. to allow for a diversity of awardee 
institutions and study topics), #3 Current undergraduates preferred, #4 
Oral presentation preferred
• Before awards are distributed, documentation will be requested to 
confirm that the abstract has been approved for presentation and that 
the undergraduate student has registered for the meeting
• Before awards are distributed, receipts will be requested to confirm 
to whom the award check will be made (to reimburse for costs associated 
with the undergraduate student’s attendance and presentation)
• Checks will be distributed at (in person) or shortly after (via mail) 
ESA’s 2018 annual meeting
• In order to make award decisions promptly after abstracts are approved 
by ESA for presentation, applications for support of Late-Breaking 
Poster presentations may not be considered
