Coast and Estuarine Research Federation Meeting – November 5-9, 2017 http://www.erf.org/cerf-2017-call-for-abstracts Abstract Deadline: May 1, 2017 Session Title: Ecological Responses to Climate Induced Mangrove Expansion into Salt Marshes Session Conveners: Melissa Baustian, Jennifer Doerr, Mike Polito and Jimmy Nelson Session Link: https://cerf.confex.com/cerf/2017/webprogrampreliminary/Session1370.html Session Short Description: Continued winter warming and drought conditions associated with climate change are projected to increase the spread of tropical black mangrove species (Avicennia germinans) into salt marshes traditionally dominated by Spartina alterniflora. Various ecosystem-level processes, such as trophic linkages in food webs, fishery production, carbon cycling and sequestration, and shoreline dynamics of sediment trapping and wave attenuation are all likely to be altered. Oral and poster presentations are invited to discuss the implications of mangroves expanding into salt marshes and how these various ecosystem processes may change. Session Keywords: carbon, climate change, food web, mangrove and salt marsh
