Sustainability Program Manager

The University of the South invites applications for the position of 
Sustainability Program Manager. Primary responsibilities include 
providing leadership and vision to create, foster, lead and implement 
campus-wide initiatives that will promote and assist student led 
sustainability movements, the sustainability priorities of the 
University and the Office of Environmental Stewardship and 
Sustainability (OESS). The Sustainability Program Manager will provide 
oversight and direction for the Sustainability Fellows program and 
encourage growth by seeking new and innovative projects that foster 
relationships and involvement among all educational majors. S/he will 
serve as the point of contact for marketing and communication and 
provide supervision for the Student Sustainability Coordinator position. 
Additionally, the candidate will manage the University’s Sustainability 
Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS) and facilitate the 
participation of students and staff in national sustainability 
organizations. 

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to the values and ideals of a 
small, selective, residential liberal arts college; excellent 
communication skills and the ability to interact comfortably with a 
broad range of people in a small community; experience with 
sustainability programming for students and community members, in 
educational programming; demonstrated leadership experience in higher 
education, and previous facilitation of group work.  Previous experience 
with college-aged students is essential.  The candidate must have 
excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizational 
abilities, flexibility, and exercise good judgement and independent 
problem-solving ability.  A minimum of three to five years’ experience 
with environmental/sustainability projects or equivalent with campus 
sustainability experience, and a bachelor's degree (master's preferred) 
in appropriate specialization is required.   

The University of the South was founded in 1857 and comprises a College 
of Arts and Sciences, with 1,700 undergraduate men and women, and a 
School of Theology, with 110 seminarians pursuing master's and doctoral 
degrees. The 13,000-acre campus is located on Tennessee's Cumberland 
Plateau between Chattanooga and Nashville. Sewanee is consistently 
ranked in the top tier of national liberal arts colleges and is 
affiliated with 28 Southern dioceses of the Episcopal Church.

programs, departments, offices, and student groups to shepherd changes 
aimed at reaching these goals. The vast majority of ongoing projects are 
student driven through the Sustainability Fellows program.  More
